Nothing races a heart like the flashing lights of a police car in the rearview mirror, and nothing can ruin a day worse than a traffic ticket from a cop (parking tickets are up there though.) So if you want to lessen your chances of receiving a ticket from Mr. Peace Officer, take in these guidelines.

  • Respect the Posted Speed Limit: If the sign reads 25 mph, then drive at that speed unless posted otherwise. If you're in a hurry, then wake up earlier.
  • Yellow Means Prepare to Stop: When a signal light turns yellow, don't slam your heavy ol' foot on the gas pedal. Instead, try the other pedal (known as the braking pedal.)
  • Make Complete Stops at Stop Signs: I had a friend who got a ticket for performing a "Hollywood stops" at 12:00 am when supposedly nobody (but a cop) was around.
  • Warm Weather: During the summer, the weather is so nice that almost everyone is out on his or her bicycle. This includes our campus police. Another friend of mine was driving a little faster than he should have and got slapped with a speeding ticket by a cop who rode like Greg Lemond.
  • Speed Traps: If you don't want to be locked into a speed trap, don't speed

Our UNR police department is simply doing their job, and a good one at that. Let them pull over the inconsiderate drivers who speed, run yellow/red lights, and carelessly slow down at stop signs. Most of the careless drivers are non-UNR students who lack the respect and safety of others. While UNR students are substantially more considerate and cautious, just keep in mind the next time you are in a hurry, your fellow classmates are surrounding you on foot, bicycle, skateboard, roller blade, scooter, and in automobiles.
