Nye Hall, the largest of our residence halls, houses up to 540 men
and women. It is named after James W. Nye (1814-1876), Nevada territorial
governor (1861-1864) and U.S. Senator from Nevada (1864-1873).
As many residence assistants will tell you, Nye and Canada Halls were
built near or on an old graveyard. They like to scare you with stories
that when they moved the gravesite, they only removed the headstones.
This is quite untrue, but it does give credence to some of the ghost
stories told about this building.
Stories of a piano being played in an empty room, weird
noises coming from old rooms in the basement, and even of apparations that
whisper kindly advice are spread all the time. There is no proof for any
of these accounts, but they're always interesting to hear.
