| Morrill Hall, built in 1886, was the first building constructed on the UNR
campus. Until 1889, it used to house the entire university, including dorms,
classes, cafeteria, museum, library, etc.
The first graduating class was in 1891 and it consisted of seven students.
Up until the '70s, every graduate would climb up into the bell tower and sign
their names. In the '70s it was considered graffiti and outlawed.
Morrill Hall is named after Justin S. Morrill (1810-1898), a U.S.
Senator from Vermont, and his Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862. This act
established the system of land-grant colleges, including, in 1864, the
University of Nevada.
Morrill Hall now contains every yearbook since the University began
printing it, in 1899, except for 1906 (due to the San Francisco
earthquake).
