Mackay Mines

Mackay Mines was built in 1908. Mackay Mines is named after John W. Mackay (1831-1902), one of the "Big Four" succesful mining men of the bonanza days on the Comstock in Virginia City.

It the home of the Keck Mineral Museum, one of six complete mineral museums in the world. The Museum includes a display of part of the Mackay Silver Collection, a one-of-a-kind silver collection that Mackay purchased from Tiffanies in New York in the late 1800's for his wife. This priceless collection has been split up; other parts are located in the Silver Legacy Hotel/Casino and the Mackay Mansion in Virginia City.

This is the only building on campus that has been made completely earthquake-proof. In an earthquake, the building will simply roll with the waves, leaving the beautiful building and its precious contents completely safe.
