Getchell Library was built in 1962 as the university's third library (excluding Morrill Hall). It is named after Noble H. Getchell (1875-1967), a Nevada mining man and a state senator. The area just in front of the library is known as Barnes Plaza.

Getchell Library is the largest library in the state of Nevada with over 1,000,00 volumes. Also housed here are group and quiet study areas, the current location of the Mines Library, a computer lab, the graduate school, the Studies Abroad program, the University Archives, government publications and special collections.

When the books were transfered here from Clark Administration in 1962, the students participated in a book passing competition where they actually carried the books across campus through the snow.
