The official name of the island in the middle of Manzanita Lake is Kess Island. Named after a student leader who had had the lake cleaned up; Kess Island was a result of all the silt and debris piled up during those efforts.

In the early 70's, one night during Mackay Week, a graduating class of students from the School of Medicine left a cadaver out on Kess Island. The next morning, police had found the body and suspecting a murder, started investigations. The students later fessed up to their prank, but it caused quite a stir at the university.
