Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (PS2) Ubisoft has finally unleashed its newest edition to the to the Splinter Cell family. With release number three, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory presents a new thriller to occupy secret spy Sam Fisher. With new techniques and a new approach to using them, powerful graphics additions, and addictive multiplayer, Chaos Theory offers its players new flexibility, in addition to the same theme it offered in its first two games. Chaos Theory is unbelievably refined. Even if you haven’t played the Splinter Cell games since its original series, Sam Fisher will be quickly familiar. There is a plethora of new moves, most of them extensive, as well as sensitive to the context of the game in which Sam can dispatch his enemies. He can now elbow drop from above, or hang onto a ledge before pulling a guard into his doom. The techniques are divided between lethal and non-lethal attacks, offering more flexibility in nearly every predicament The best new moves are with Sam’s knife. It’s a weapon that he should always have on him. An opponent can be taken down with a quick slash, and the blade is also useful when interviewing suspects. The shotgun and stock options improve the rifle’s damage and accuracy. The pistol can temporarily disable most electronic and electric devices from far away. The effect is only short term however. The knife can also be useful when you need to break locks. Bashing doors is also an option, which is good when the heat sensor reveals a guard on the other side. Rounding out the new skills is a hacking minigame. Players must use a quick instincts when changing a series of numbers to figure out an IP address that will afford entry to keypads and computer systems. AI from the old game would be no match for some of these moves, so developers have increased AI skills as well. Enemies are aware of small variations in light and sound. To compensate, Sam’s suit now has a separate meter for each, including a threshold indicator which shows how much noise a player can make with attracting attention from the AI. If a guard becomes aware of danger, he’ll light a flare or turn on a flashlight to search for the source of the danger. There is an increase in responses to alarms. There is also an increase in a tendency for guards to investigate noises together. Players must adapt to goons who might not faze more professional agents. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is incredibly challenging. The single player game was pretty easy. On hard, it was simple enough for a beginner to go through the AI challenges. Experienced players may want to increase the difficulty before launching into the single player game. Overall, the game was excellent. Ubi has really gone in depth with the graphics, gameplay, and overall experience of the game. This is an excellent edition to the Splinter Cell family. |
